AVI20- Grade 10 Open Visual Arts
Course Overview
This course builds on the skills and knowledge developed in the grade 9 Visual Arts class. Students are introduced to new ideas, material, and processes for artistic thinking and experimentation. Students will follow the design process and apply the elements and principles of design in the creation of original works of art. The emphasis of the course is on hands-on learning. However, students will be exposed to theories and concepts, analyze existing artworks and also learn about the connections between works of art and their historical contexts.
How this course supports expectations for the Catholic School Graduate
This course seeks to further the achievement of the Catholic Graduate expectations by integrating scripture, Catholic Church teaching, and moral and ethical reflection into the curriculum. Two specific Catholic School Graduate Expectations which are emphasized in the Visual Arts projects include but not limited to: Social Justice project(s): A responsible citizen who gives witness to Catholic social teaching by promoting peace, justice and the sacredness of human life. Summative Project Choice: Patron Saint Research, Drawing and Sculpture Project - A reflective, creative and holistic thinker who solves problems and makes responsible decisions with an informed moral conscience for the common good; All Major Projects have Reflective components and Sketchbook Development throughout the semester - A reflective, creative and holistic thinker who solves problems and makes responsible decisions with an informed moral conscience for the common good;
Course Expectations
A) Creating and Presenting:
Students will apply the creative process using the elements and principles to create a variety of art works, individually and/or collaboratively using a variety of media/materials and traditional/emerging technologies, tools and techniques.
B) Reflecting, Responding, and Analyzing:
Students will demonstrate an understanding of the critical analysis process by examining, interpreting, evaluating and reflecting on various art works. Students will also demonstrate an understanding of how art works reflect the society in which they were created, how they can affect personal values, and describe various opportunities related to visual arts.
C) Foundations:
Students will demonstrate an understanding of conventions, techniques, correct terminology, and responsible practices used in the creation of visual art works.

Material Covered
Introduction to Art
Look at composition. Review of the elements of art and an introduction to the principles of design. Develop skills and vocabulary necessary to discuss students’ own artwork and the artwork of others.
Drawing
Refine basic drawing skills through the application of various drawing techniques. Experiment with a variety of wet and dry media.
Painting
Learn colour mixing and acrylic painting techniques. Practice safe handling of materials.
Sculpture
Learn different techniques to produce artworks in clay. Practice safe handling of materials. Study art from the Middle Ages.

Sketchbooks & Art Kits1. Students are required to have a sketchbook and bring it to every class. Sketchbooks can be purchased at Dollarrama for 3.00.
In addition to a sketchbook, students are expected to have a binder or duotang for notes.
2. Art Kits: Art supplies are available for the students to use in class or during lunch time; however, we do encourage students to have their own materials if they want to work on projects at home.

Homework
Once every 2 weeks students will be given a sketchbook assignment that is to be completed for homework. Otherwise, students should realistically be able to complete projects during class time. Students who cannot meet the deadlines are encouraged to finish the work at lunch.
Attendance
Regular attendance is expected. Be on time and be prepared. If you are absent it is your responsibility to bring a note to excuse your time away. It is also your responsibility to find out what was missed from another student. To do so, please consult the course website.
Food & Drinks
Drinks are not allowed in class with the exception of water in a refillable water bottle. Food is not allowed for health and safety reasons. Please see the teacher if you have a medical condition that requires you to eat on a regular basis.
Electronic devices
There is often need for technology in the art room... as long as it is for educational purposes only. You can use your cell phone or laptop to research an artist or find an image. However, there is to be no texting, making phone calls, watching videos or playing games. As well, listening to music is a privilege, not a right. It is at the discretion of the teacher as to when the use of ipods and other music devices are permissible.
